Program Description

Loyola believes that students gaining pre-professional preparation should not be segregated in separate courses of study. Therefore, pre-professional students choose one of Loyola’s regular major programs. To meet the special needs of pre-professional students, Loyola offers an exceptionally strong program of advising and academic course curricula to meet the demands of professional school. In addition, special co-curricular activities and internships are available to complement the academic program.

Pre-medical, Pre-dental and Pre-veterinary

Students interested in the health professions choose one of Loyola’s regular major programs. Depending on their major, students may need to supplement their major requirements with coursework required for the health profession of interest. To meet the special needs of students interested in the health professions, Loyola offers natural science in a minor which will fulfiil the requirements for applying to professional school. In addition, special co-curricular activities and internships are available to complement the academic program.

The success of Loyola’s students in gaining admission into health professions programs has been outstanding. Our medical, dental and veterinary school acceptance rates typically exceed the national average. In recent years, Loyola students have matriculated into health professional schools at University of Maryland, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Georgetown University, Johns Hopkins University, Loyola University Chicago, Harvard University, Rochester University, Duke University, Emory University, Thomas Jefferson University, University of Pittsburgh, St. Louis University, Medical College of Virginia, University of West Virginia, Robert Wood Johnson University, University of Pennsylvania, SUNY Medical Schools, and Uniformed Services University. Approximately 85 percent of students applying for admission into medical school are accepted for admission, with similar success for our pre-dental students applying for admission into dental colleges. Loyola has also experienced outstanding success in the placement of its pre-veterinary graduates.

Most students choose biology or biology/chemistry interdisciplinary as a major for pre-professional preparation. It is also possible to major in other science disciplines, such as physics and mathematics, or even non-science disciplines. Students should discuss their career aspirations with the pre-health advisor to ensure that they meet all course requirements for the professional school in which they have interest.

Pre-law

Open to students in every major, the pre-law program at Loyola is essentially one of advisement. Supplementing the departmental advisor, the pre-law advisor discusses with students the appropriate electives that will help the student develop those habits of mind that law schools stress in their admission criteria. Admission to law school is competitive. Therefore, students must be serious and reflective in their curricular choices. The role of the pre-law advisor is to help them make informed choices. Students do best when they major in disciplines that challenge them, interest them and reflect their aptitudes. Law schools are much more concerned with how well the applicant can read, write, think and analyze than what the applicant’s particular undergraduate major is.
